Sometimes, with the best of intentions, we lie to make others feel good, or we lie so that we don't hurt their feelings. We sometimes lie to protect ourselves too. You may be trying to tell a "little white lie" to someone now for a positive purpose. But you are someone who wears your heart on your sleeve. Just be straightforward and soften the blow with your usual compassion and sensitivity.
